Changes in the PSLE 2025 Exam Format
One key change in PSLE 2025 is the adjustment in the English examination’s weightage. This change aims to better assess students’ oral communication skills while balancing the overall assessment components. Here’s a breakdown of the updated English paper weightage:
- Oral Examination: Increased from 15% to 20%
- Paper 1 (Situational & Continuous Writing): Decreased from 27.5% to 25%
- Paper 2 (Written Paper): Decreased from 47.5% to 45%
With a greater emphasis on oral communication, students should dedicate more time to improving their speaking skills. Reading aloud, practicing articulation and engaging in structured discussions can help them excel in this area.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) About PSLE 2025
Parents often have pressing questions about the PSLE system, especially with the changes introduced in recent years. Here are some commonly asked questions and their answers:
- What is the PSLE scoring system?
The PSLE scoring system focuses on individual performance rather than peer comparison. Each subject is graded using Achievement Levels (ALs), ranging from AL1 (best) to AL8 (lowest). A student’s PSLE Score is the sum of their ALs across English, Mathematics, Mother Tongue and Science, with the best possible score being AL4 and the highest possible score AL32.
This system ensures a fairer assessment by reducing fine differentiation between students, allowing each child to focus on their personal academic growth.
- Does taking Higher Mother Tongue provide an advantage?
Higher Mother Tongue (HMT) is beneficial only if your child is applying to a Special Assistance Plan (SAP) school. There are only nine SAP schools in Singapore, and to receive a posting advantage, your child must achieve a PSLE Score of 15 or lower.
It’s important to note that there are no bonus points for scoring well in HMT. Therefore, students should take HMT only if they are confident in handling the additional workload.
- How to prepare for PSLE?
Preparation is key to PSLE success. I have put together a 3-month revision plan that provides a structured approach to tackling each subject efficiently.
